Mailbox Monday

Reamde by Neal Stephenson: "If you are a Stephenson fan who believes “Snow Crash” and “Cryptonomicon” (1999) are his greatest novels, “Reamde” will come as very good news, for in many ways it can be read as a thematic revisitation of those excellent precursors. Once again Stephenson is asking us to think about virtual worlds and information storage; once again, by God, he makes reading so much fun it feels like a deadly sin." ~New York Times

Ugly to Start With by John Michael Cummings: "Ugly to Start With punctuates the exuberant highs, bewildering midpoints, and painful lows of growing up, and affirms that adolescent dreams and desires are often fulfilled in surprising ways." amazon.com

  4. The title Reamde is a play on Read Me which makes perfect sense when you think that he's writing about technology...never quite what you'd expect it be once it's out in final copy. I'll know more when I've read past p. 24, but so far? It's awesome!

  5. Oooo, Reamde, the description you included is enticing. I think I may regret turning down an opportunity to review this book. I'm very interested to read what you think of ir.

Ugly to Start With sounds captivating and a little disturbing.

  13. I wish I could have received some books in my mailbox... These two sound interesting. And for me, finally, I've finished Kawabata's The Sound of the Mountain, and posted a review on it for my JLC 5 contribution... just in time before the end of Jan. Thanks for the opportunity!

  17. Stu, I started Reamde after becoming quite disillusioned with The Savage Detectives. Then, Richard got me back on track with it so now I've put Reamde on hold til I finish the Detecties. It is interesting, though, and I think you'd like it alot. Have you read anything by Stephenson before? Crtyptonomicon was quite good.
