Christmas Past

It's the last day of Winter Break Christmas Vacation for me. I wish I had a lovely photograph of snow to put above my post, but we've had what my husband called "a Tennessee Christmas": lots of gray, rainy weather. It hasn't dampened my spirits.

This was such a lovely two weeks off. They began with my mother and I baking Christmas cookies together while listening to the radio playing glorious music like Handel's Messiah. And each day after that was more special than the one before, from Christmas Eve services with lit candles (I hope they never stop doing that in church, the whole sanctuary holding real flames atop real candles which always seem to burn your hand no matter what holder they're stuck into) to praying for my son's safety on New Year's Eve.

I was able to read so many books! I read Across the River and Into The Trees by Hemingway, Believing The Lie by Elizabeth George, Loving by Henry Green, The Buddha In The Attic by Julie Otsuka, The Bastard by Kim Novak, Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin, Shutter Island by Dennis LeHane, and now I'm finishing up a new book from Penguin UK called Me Before You by JoJo Moyes. Then I will be concentrating on The Savage Detectives for Richard's and Rise's group read.

There's not much you can give me in the way of presents beyond time to read and time with family. I spent every minute I could with my parents before they left for Florida; then last night my son and I went to see Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol before having dinner at Stir Crazy. My boy, my 21 year old man son, sitting across the table from me with a Bud Light. Weird, but wonderful, to see him growing up.

"What are you doing tomorrow, Mom?" he asked.

"Sitting and reading," I replied. "You know, on my 'island', alone with a book. My favorite thing to do."

And from then on, it was tease me about my 'island'. "Look at Miss Ten and Two", he said from the passenger seat as if his driving record is such that he can mock my safety. "She'll be reading on her island tomorrow."

Which is today. Which I will do because on Saturday? It will be time to take down the creche. The tree. The crispy garland over the mantle. My origami ornaments on the little tree on my bathroom counter. Christmas will be officially over.

But, what a Christmas it was.

  1. It sounds like you had a wonderful holiday. It is strange/gratifying to see your child become an adult, isn't it?

  2. Sounds like an absolutely perfect vacation to me, and I like your son's sense of humor! As much as loved having little girls, I seem to enjoy my daughters' company more the older they get.

  7. I took down the tree yesterday and miss the lights at night. Oh, well, looking forward to another Christmas already. Glad you had a good one with family and your reading!

Re Donna Leon and the Venice Challenge, I have featured one of her books as a Teaser Tuesday and a Books at the Library post but haven't done a review, and remember liking the atmosphere of Venice in her books! Good luck with the challenge.

  12. Kristin, I should have mentioned that Believing the Lie was on NetGalley and won't be published until January 10 (I think that's the date). Sorry! But, the good news is it's coming soon.

  13. Glad your Xmas was wonderful, as to the weather, wet windy, trees blown down and that was just Thursday.

  14. Sounds wonderful. It has been a long 4-day week back at work after 2 weeks off for the holidays. Wonderful to spend time with family and friends. Didn't get near as much reading done as I wanted, but did see several movies and got to play a lot of XBox, so relaxation was had and had in abundance.

Hope the rest of the school year is a nice one for you.

Didn't take you long to change the header image, eh?

  15. What a lovely Christmas you had! I share your appreciation for candle-lit Christmas Eve services even though I do have a knack for burning myself. I hope you have a wonderful return to school!

  16. That's a lot of books. Are you a speed reader? An island surrounded by books. Do you also read in bed at night?
    I'm sorry. I'm inquisitive.

  17. Edgar, I'm not a speed reader at all. I'm just a consistent reader, "slow and steady" so to speak. I read every evening, as my husband prefers television and I refuse to watch it for the most part. During vacation, I grab every spare minute I can find to read as it is my great joy, and this two week break I've read seven books. That surprises even me! Anyway, glad you asked. There's no sense being book bloggers if we can't discuss books, reading habits, and other bookish things along the way.

  18. Beautiful, beautiful. And I sure know what you mean about New Year's Eve. I haven't had a relaxing one in many years. I can't believe how much you read. It has been ages and ages since I've sat and read that much in two weeks time.

  19. Your holiday sounds perfect -- books and family. What could be better?

I'm a little envious that you have the new JoJo Moyes book, although I have her last book and haven't yet gotten to it. So, shame on me for turning green. I'll have to bump that last one up on the pile. I do love her books. I managed to read 5, after we returned from our spending a few days with son and DIL in Nashville. It's wonderful to just disappear into your little book world, isn't it?
