I have two exciting new books to share this week. One of them is entitled No Great Mischief by Alistair MacLeod. It won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award (as did Colum McCann who won it for his novel Let The Great World Spin in 2011). The other is Island: The Complete Stories, also by MacLeod.
Look at what these outstanding authors are saying about him:

I'm so excited to read his work, and I thank W. W. Norton publishers for sending these two books to my mailbox this week. What exciting things arrived in your mailbox?

Parrish! What a treasure trove of virtuality! You have such interesting authors, most of whom I've not yet heard. I wonder what Saramago you received...I have one waiting for me, but the only book I've read of his is Blindness. Which I still often think about.
ReplyDeleteSusan, so glad to hear such a ringing endorsement from you, too! Every where I turn people are praising this book.
ReplyDeleteI have not read this author yet but his books look great!

ReplyDeleteOops! Missed some letters in my previous comment :)
ReplyDeleteI recently read about this author (maybe when he recently won his award?) and he sounds very talented. I will put him on my authors to be read list!
ReplyDeleteAw, this brings back good memories. No Great Mischief was the very first book I ever reviewed on my blog, and I liked it a lot! After I read No Great Mischief I snagged a copy of Island at a used book sale, but I haven't gotten to read it yet. I love the pretty new covers and I look forward to hearing what you think of the books!
ReplyDeleteNothing in my mailbox this week but it is a good chance to read the piles of books that have got pushed aside!
ReplyDeleteI own these books. One day I am going to read them!
ReplyDeleteI commented from my iphone, but it didn't seem to arrive here.
ReplyDeleteI first read MacLeod (he's Canadian, some people are a bit confused from his winning the IMPAC Dublin award) when I was in university, which wasn't yesterday! His short story collection, Lost Salt Gift of Blood, was just marvelous. I expect that all those stories are included in your book, Island. Many of his stories are set in the Maritimes, my home. His characters represent many people from my area.
I read No Great Mischief a few years ago, and it was also wonderful. I think you'll like it. Family, and history - here's my review
His son, Alexander, wrote the Giller-nominated Light Lifting, more wonderful short stories.
So glad you've discovered this great Canadian treasure.
RaiderGirl3, thank you so much for leaving such an indepth comment about MacLeod, his writing, and connections to your life! It makes the book(s) that much more meaningful to me.
ReplyDeletelooking at them, I realize I actually own Island. I bought it in Ireland and don't believe I ever read it. Must find it!
