Behold the prize for November:

As I'm sure you're already full of turkey, that is not the prize. The prize is a pair of beautiful koi makie stickers, made with 24k gold and imported from Japan. They apply easily to your cell phone, or laptop, to decorate it. The second thing is a charm of a good luck kitty, which I thought was Japanese, but is apparently Chinese. All the same, it attaches to your cell phone and lights up when it rings. Or, vibrates. Or, whatever it is that your phone does. I've heard that decorating one's cell phone is all the rage in Japan, and we wouldn't want to be left out, would we?
To enter the giveaway, please leave a particularly meaningful quote to you, from one of your Japanese readings, in the comments. It would give me great pleasure to have a collection of them especially during this holiday when we take time to examine the meaning of things in our lives.

Blessings~and good luck.

ReplyDeleteFrom a children's book I read recently, nominated for the Cybils Nonfiction Picture Book Award:
“In Japan, we sleep on futons. They are light and very easy to fold and carry. When you air them out in the sun, they feel warm and fluffy. Mmmm, very nice to sleep on!”
I still have not finished the first part of Tale of Genji which is the one book I pledged to read for this challenge. I intend to finish it before the end of the year.
ReplyDeleteSo, there is no need to enter me for this giveaway. I still have not earned the cool bookmarks you sent me earlier.
But I wanted to give you a quote from Genji.
"The warbler still sings as sweetly as ever then in those bygone days,
but the blossoms he once loved do not look at all the same."
Consider yourself entered, CB, that is a beautiful quote.
ReplyDeleteThis is from Newlywed, a short story in Banana Yoshimoto's Lizard, a collection of short fiction.
ReplyDeleteShe nodded, and said, "Of course, and I'm not saying that you should feel the way I do. If you--or anyone on this train, for that matter--thought of life as a kind of train, instead of worrying only about your usual destinations, you'd be surprised how far you could go, just with the money you have in you wallet right now."
I've enjoyed this reading challenge, and like the main character in Newlywed, don't want to get off this strange train.
(P.S. Of course I've made a typo! That should be "your wallet" in the last line of the quote. : -)
ReplyDeleteThose stickers are so cute! Where do you get them? Love the kitty, too, of course. :)
ReplyDeleteNo need to enter me in the give-away. Just here to say I so understand this comment:
ReplyDelete...my son wouldn’t answer his cell if I called him to save his life. Nope, he’ll only answer if I text him.
Sounds just like my daughter! She responds to text messages and Face Book posts. :) Although, I have to be honest. She called on Thanksgiving morning and we had a lovely chat for almost half an hour. Doesn't take much to make me happy and I was in the best mood all day after that phone call! :)
I don't have it here with me, but the line I'd like to quote is one from Murakami's 'A Wild Sheep Chase' (I'm pretty sure it was that one) about the beautiful ears of a model. It was a great paragraph, all about ears, and yet it completely eludes me...
ReplyDeleteLove the maneki-neko. Both of my kids have those for their cell phones!
Quotes I've written down from my recent JapLit reads...
ReplyDelete"What right, then, do human beings hold to decide that things not of their own creation nevertheless belong to them?" p.120 of I Am a Cat (Natsume Soseki).
"For surely even humans will not flourish forever. I think it best to wait in patience for the Day of the Cats." p.7 I Am a Cat
And I love the alliteration of this sentence on the first page of The Old Capital (Yasunari Kawabata):
"The trunk of the tree twisted slightly to the right at about the height of Chieko's waist"
I've left my other notebook at home so maybe I'll share some more nice quotes later on!
Gnoe-gnoe, those are wonderful! The first two have convinced me more than ever that I need to read I Am A Cat. If you find any more, I'd love it if you'd record them here for me; as it is, the ones you left are beautiful. I'm awaiting for my copy of The Old Capital to arrive...
ReplyDeleteI'm not entering but a day should not pass without poetry. Could not resist posting a bit of Ryokan
ReplyDeleteOur lives are like the plants
floating along the water's edge
Illuminated by the moon
Happy happy joy joy! :)
ReplyDeleteI'll get to the post as soon as I can to ship this off to you, Gnoe! I'm so glad you're pleased you won.
ReplyDeleteNo need to rush! The anticipation is fun as well :)
ReplyDeleteThe Package has arrived! Thank you SO much Bellezza! :))
